Music Impacting Our Behaviors?

In my little country there is much talk today as to whether music is influencing the attitudes and mannerisms of our children. Strange enough, some of the people who deny music having any impact are ‘musicians’ themselves. There is even talk about whether the dance moves are teaching our children early sexual behaviors.

The original translation of the word music comes from a word which means 'to think'.

Music influences the human mind, spirit, soul and emotions in various ways.

Let us look at what are some of the uses of music:

Music is used to:

  • Celebrate

  • Conjure evil spirits

  • Put a person into a trance

  • Worship

  • Entertain

Music creates a certain mood or feeling within all of us. Different music will have different effect on each person. In past times and to a lesser extent today, music is used to summon the troops to prepare for battle. The use of the trumpet is one such instrument used for signaling.

The sound of music naturally causes movement in the human body. We move to the pulsating rhythm of music without any conscious effort. The body just naturally will gyrate to a rhythm.
The Music videos and the music itself dictate trends, fashions and even help with the development of what becomes culture.

Our Rappers, DJs, Singers and Musicians command a certain power over their listeners or their audience. I could give numerous examples of how music has influenced the development of what is called the rich Jamaican culture.

In conclusion, this is not something we can deny. If there are uncertainties then it has to do with the degree of the impact of music on the human mind and how does it influence their behavior.

The world is still not so sure of the full effects of music upon the human mind. This still remains something to be properly researched and explored.

This is what the bible tells us:“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according
